    Paedagogical Information

    Paedagogical Aims

We consider a nursery to be an institution of education. It is our aim to create learning opportunities and at the same time to make children feel completely at home in their daytime surroundings.

What is of special importance to us?

    • Respectful and caring behaviour
    • Open and confident communication between parents and staff
    • A loving and caring atmosphere for the children
    • A caring and reassuring settling-in period during which children will be given their individually needed care and time. Daily routine and strong parental support will be necessary at the beginning of this process.
    • The promotion of children’s self-esteem. Individuality, independence, social behaviour, democratic decision making and inter-personal relationships.
    • Cognitive stimulation. Talking about and understanding various issues and projects.
    • Stimulation of speaking ability. This works best between the ages of 2 and 5 as the so-called “window for language development” opens in a child’s brain during this period.
    • Stimulation of creativity through painting and handicraft with various materials and will include visits to theatre, puppet shows and cinema.
    • Stimulation of individual social development by organising everyday life together, celebrating together, learning from each other and acting out conflict situations in non-aggressive ways.
    • Stimulation of exercise and interest in the outside world by out-of-doors play, gymnasium sessions and excursions for example to bakers, police, museums, a farm and science days.

Project participation lasting 2 or 3 months according to the complexity of the subject.

    Paedagogical Aspects

    1. Babies from the age of 3 months in the crèche
Days in the crèche are organised so that very young children (under a year old) can have individual caring such as breast feeding, nappy changing and sleeping. Older children have a more fixed daily routine. Cooperation between staff and parents is particularly important in the crèche.
    2. Educational key aspect: Science
In accordance with the particular environment of the nursery a two phase learning concept of "research and discovery" will be implemented:

      • Phase 1: Stimulating interest in aspects of science in day-to-day activities in the nursery (from 3 years of age).
      • Phase 2: A prepared environment helping children to look for and discover scientific principles. This is an activity for small groups and aimed at children a year before they go to school (from 4/5 years of age).

    3. English language in the nursery
In the daily routine and in specially prepared environments children will be introduced to many traditional rhymes and songs such as nursery rhymes – always taught to English and American born children. English finger games, circle games, games to get children moving, stories and songs as well as English speaking puppets will be introduced.English with Betsy /Carpentry with Betsy  Elizabeth (Betsy) Higgins-Pösinger is an English native speaker, montessori teacher and master craftsman of carpentry.  Her projects are a regular segment of the Kindergarten's program.  For more information (photos, sample songs, project concepts) see www.williamsdaughter.at.
    4. Overlapping group activities
Activities will often be group overlapping. This enables children to choose activities according to their individual development and to join in any of the current activities in separate rooms.
    5. Multicultural education and a "real-life-world" course of action
With a "real-life-world" course of action the staff will take the changed life situation of these children fully into account. This situation is caused by domestic changes and upheavals to the life of children in the Biocenter Nursery coming from very different national and cultural surroundings. This diverse real-life-world can arise from the changing international research work of their parents. Staff will address these issues in their pedagogical work.
    6. Orientation on Montessori – Pedagogy
Children will be accepted as they are, they will be treated with respect and accompanied along their developmental paths in loving and caring ways.Children will be helped to obtain individual independence. Montessori principles in the fields of language, writing, mathematics, cosmic education, sensory learning and everyday activities, will be used.

    Work with Parents

We consider ourselves partners of parents in the elementary education and caring of children. Meeting the needs of children has been the central focus of Kinderfreunde's work with parents for 100 years. The amount of parent-work we do in our nurseries is defined by the needs and the interests of the parents.

    • Flexibility with regards to special wishes
    • Provision of educational services e.g. seminars for parents
    • Transparency to ensure parents are always well-informed
    • Provision of visiting mornings
    • A parent’s magazine published a few times a year
    • Parent evenings
    • Celebrations, parties, excursions involving parents
    • Possible enrolment of guest-children where special cases arise

    Additional Contacts:

In addition to the staff and management of the nursery there are other important sources of help can be contacted if necessary:
